What Is A Sleep Score and How Is it Calculated?

October 12th, 2017

As you log more nights of sleep, you’ll start to get familiar with the various metrics SleepScore uses to measure your nightly rest. One of these metrics is your SleepScore. SleepScore technology was developed by ResMed, the leaders in sleep medicine, to measure detailed, individualized sleep patterns and deliver a daily score based not just on the quantity of your sleep, but the quality of your sleep as well.

Your daily SleepScore is an aggregate of your nightly logged sleep data, measured on a scale of 1-100 and is meant to be a simple, easy to understand metric to see how well you’ve slept at a glance. In the morning, after tracking your sleep with the SleepScore app, you can dive deeper into your nighttime rest by looking at your nightly sleep chart. In this article, we’ll go over which areas of sleep are used to create your SleepScores, the difference between your Mind and Body scores, and how the SleepScore tracks these metrics to get you the most accurate scores every night.

What Parameters are Used to Calculate My SleepScore?

SleepScore measures your sleep on a variety of levels. It monitors and analyzes your total sleep duration, your time taken to fall asleep, your time in light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep, and the number and duration of awakenings you have each night. These variables are then measured against known sleep averages for your age and gender, which have been established by well-published research, expert advisors, and by analyzing more than six million nights of sleep. All of your sleep data is then put into our algorithm to create your specific nightly SleepScore, rated from 0-100.

About MindScore and BodyScore

Your MindScore is another metric that tells you how mentally restorative your sleep was. It’s primarily calculated based on how much REM sleep you get each night, the most important sleep stage where memories are stored and the brain is regenerated.

Your BodyScore is a third metric that tells you how physically restorative your sleep was. This score takes your deep sleep into account, the phase of sleep necessary for the revitalization of both the body and the immune system.

How Does My SleepScore App Track these Metrics?

Your SleepScore app monitors your breathing patterns and body movements using technology similar to echolocation. Our software recognizes the combination of respiration and body-movement signals so that your overall sleep state (including stages) can be reliably assessed.

Now that you know a little more about your SleepScore and how it’s calculated, you should be able to easily tell when you’re getting better sleep, the best amount of time to nap, or when there’s additional room for improvement. Sleep well!
